Softball: Roadrunners Win On TEAL Day

Espinoza Tallies Six RBIs

Denver - The Metropolitan State University of Denver softball team took the final two games of the series against Colorado School of Mines Monday evening.  The Roadrunners took the first game 4-3 and the second game 8-5 to improve to 29-12 overall and 24-12 in the RMAC.

Game one was a close battle between the two sides.  The Orediggers took the first lead in the top of the third.  Scoring an unearned run to take a 1-0 lead over the Roadrunners. Mines would go on to extend the lead in the next inning to 2-0.

The Roadrunners made it on the board in the bottom of the fifth.  Alyssa Richer and Kristyn Peters (Lakewood, CO/Dakota Ridge) both made it on base for the Roadrunners off a pair of singles. Sarena Espinoza (Corona, Calif./Corona Centennial H.S.) hits a double to score Richter and cut the lead down to 2-1.

In the bottom of the fifth Megan Sansburn (/Dakota Ridge H.S. ) came up big for the Roadrunners firing one out of the park to tie the game up at two.

The Orediggers continued the battle, stealing the lead the next inning after earning a walk and posting a hit for one run in the inning.

MSU Denver played a great sixth inning to score the tying and what would prove to be the winning run in the game.  Peters and Espinoza led the inning off with back-to-back doubles, with Epsinoza scoring Peters for the tying run. Jasmine Wessel (Thornton, CO/Horizon High School) would send Espinoza home off a -single up the middle for the 4-3 lead.

The Roadrunners held the Orediggers scoreless in the final inning, with a runner on first and third MSU Denver was able to make the play to get the final out and to take the 4-3 win in game one.

Two homeruns got the second game going for the Roadrunners.  Espinoza and Annika Anderson (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) both hit two-run homers for a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the second.

Following an hour-and-a-half lightning delay Espinoza hit a homerun that would be wiped off the board and count only as a triple after the umpire made a second warning.  The "triple" scored Koryna Wright (Rancho Cucamonga, CA/Rancho Cucamonga High School) and Peters to take 6-0 lead in the bottom of the third.

The Orediggers were able to put two runs up on the Roadrunners in the top of the fourth after loading the bases.  However, MSU Denver held them to the two runs and made it out of the inning still up 6-2.

With the Roadrunners up 7-2, the Orediggers made a strong effort for the comeback scoring three runs to cut the lead to 7-5 heading into the sixth inning.

In the bottom of the sixth Kim fired a triple and Wright recorded a sacrifice fly to score the Roadrunners eighth run of the game.

Once again, in the bottom of the seventh the Roadrunners were able to hold the Orediggers scoreless to take the 8-5 win in game two.

The Roadrunners will host its last home series this upcoming weekend with the games set to kick off Friday, April 27 at 4 p.m.
