Denver- The Metropolitan State University of Denver baseball team split its double header on Monday evening against UCCS. The Roadrunners fell 9-4 in game one but bounced back for a 5-4 walk off win in game two. The Roadrunners are now 19-20 overall and 15-11 in conference play.
In game one, senior Donny Ortiz Jr. got the game rolling in the bottom of the first firing a leadoff double to reach base. Ortiz was then advanced to third on a Mountain Lion wild pitch. Senior
Hunter Donaldson (Fort Collins, Colo./Fossil Ridge H.S.) then grounded out to send Ortiz home for the first run of the game.
The Mountain Lions tied the game up in the top of the third, but a homer from senior
Cale O'Donnell (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain H.S.) in the bottom of the inning would steal the lead for the Roadrunners at 2-1.
UCCS went on to take 3-2 in the fourth, and broke away in the fifth scoring a three run homer to take a 6-2 lead over the Roadrunners.
The Mountain Lions scored three more runs in the game and held the Roadrunners to just two, one coming from a home run hit by junior
Logan Soole (Louisville, Colo./Monarch H.S.). However, that wouldn't be enough and UCCS took the 9-4 win in game one.
Through the first three innings of the second game the score remained at zero. Following an hour and a half rain delay the Mountain Lions made it on the board first, hitting a one run homer to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth.
The Roadrunners answered back in the bottom of the innings. After loading the bases, junior
Draven Adame (Lamar, Colo. /Lamar High School) fired a triple to score all three runners to take a 3-1 lead.
The Mountain Lions recorded a big fifth inning taking the lead from the Roadrunners after scoring three runs, however, the Roadrunners fought back and tied the game back up in the bottom of the inning. Soole reached base on a bunt, followed by a big double from senior
Hunter Donaldson (Fort Collins, Colo./Fossil Ridge H.S.) to tie the score up at four heading into the sixth inning.
The score remained knotted up at four through to the bottom of the seventh. Following an earned walk from senior
Trent Maloney (Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County H.S.) and a double from O'Donnell, senior
Sean Kennedy (Aurora, Colo./Grandview High School) fired a single to score Maloney for the 5-4 walk off win.
The Roadrunners will travel to Norther Colorado tomorrow to take on the Bears at 2 p.m.
