Denver- The Metropolitan State University of Denver softball team defeated Adams State in a double header on Friday afternoon. The Roadrunners won game one 4-0 and earned an 11-3 win in five innings in game two of the day.
Darby McGhee (Camarillo, Calif./Adolfo Camarillo High School) had her 20
th start on the mound for the Roadrunners this season in game one of the double header and held the Grizzlies to just two hits in the game and a shutout.
The Roadrunners scored one run in the bottom of the second when a single from junior
Jasmine Wessel (Thornton, CO/Horizon High School) would force a Grizzly error and allow senior
Annika Anderson (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) to score for the 1-0 lead.
The score stayed 1-0 in favor of the Roadrunners till the bottom of the fifth when MSU Denver put together a strong rally to score three more runs. With junior
Ashlee Kim (Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County H.S.) and senior
Kristyn Peters (Lakewood, CO/Dakota Ridge) reaching base on a double and single, senior Sarena Espinonza knocked a double to center field to score Kim. Anderson would wrap up the scoring in the fifth, hitting a double down the left line to send Espinoza home for the 4-0 lead.
MSU Denver would hold on to the 4-0 lead through the final two innings for the win in game one.
MSU Denver had a huge showing in game two out hitting the Grizzlies 10-3.
After the Grizzlies took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, the remainder of the game belonged to the Roadrunners. The team cut the lead down to 2-1 early in the bottom of the first and Espionza stole the lead for the Roadrunners scoring a three run homer to take a 4-2 lead for her team.
MSU Denver posted a huge third inning, scoring five runs on four hits to take a 9-2 lead.
The team was able to end the game in five innings when a hit from Peters would force an error to score pinch runner
Harley Huser (Thornton, Colo./Mountain Range H.S.), giving the Roadrunners the 11-3 win in game two.
Espinoza ended the day going three for six from the plate and batting in five runs for the Roadrunners.
Kylee Burnside (Idaho Falls, Idaho/Skyline H.S.) earned her 11
th win of the season on the mound for the Roadrunners in game two against Adams.
The Roadrunners will wrap up the series tomorrow with the double header scheduled to start at 12 noon.
