Baseball: Roadrunners Split Double Header at Colorado Christian

Roadrunners wrap up series tomorrow

Lakewood, Colo.- The Metropolitan State University of Denver baseball team split its double header against Colorado Christian on Saturday afternoon.  The Roadrunners fell 2-1 in game one but bounced back to take game two 8-1.

A home run in the bottom of the first inning would give the Cougars and early 1-0 lead over the Roadrunners.

The Cougars maintained the 1-0 lead until the top of the fourth when the Roadrunners were able to tie the game up. Senior Donny Ortiz Jr. and junior Logan Soole (Louisville, Colo./Monarch H.S.) led the inning off drawing walks for their team.  Senior Cale O'Donnell (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain H.S.) was able to bat the tying run in scoring Otriz for the 1-1 tie.

The score remained knotted up at one until the final inning when the Cougars were able to put one run up on the Roadrunners in the bottom of the seventh to take the close 2-1 battle in game one.

Senior Trent Maloney (Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County H.S.) started on the mound in game two for the Roadrunners.  Allowing just one run and three hits in game two.

The Roadrunners started game two off strong, taking an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first. After Ortiz and O'Donnell were hit by a pitch, senior Sean Kennedy (Aurora, Colo./Grandview High School) was able to fire a double to left center to score Ortiz for the 1-0 lead.

The Roadrunners kept the 1-0 lead through to the third when Soole extended the lead knocking one out of the park for the 2-0 lead.

A home run would be the lone run scored for the Cougars in the bottom of the fourth. The Roadrunners would control the rest of the game with O'Donnell hitting a two run homer in the fifth and senior Trent Maloney (Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County H.S.) hitting a grand slam in the top of the sixth wrapping up the scoring for a 8-1 win.

The series between the two sides will wrap up tomorrow with a single game to be played at 1 p.m.
