Softball: Espinoza and Anderson Lead Roadrunners to Double Header Win Over Chadron

Roadrunners win both against Eagles

Denver- The Metropolitan State University of Denver softball team earned two victories against Chadron State on Saturday.  The Roadrunners earned a 1-0 win in game one and a 3-1 walk-off win in game two.

Sophomore pitcher Darby McGhee (Camarillo, Calif./Adolfo Camarillo High School) started game one for the Roadrunners and pulled off the shutout, holding the Eagles scoreless the entire seven innings.

The Eagles strung together some offense in the top of the fourth, loading the bases with 2 outs. However, MSU Denver came up big to make it out of inning keeping the score at zero.

The Roadrunners were able to break the scoring drought when senior Sarena Espinoza (Corona, Calif./Corona Centennial H.S.) hit one out of the park in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 1-0 lead.

That would be the lone run of the game and the Roadrunners were able to take the 1-0 win.

Kylee Burnside (Idaho Falls, Idaho/Skyline H.S.) was the starting pitcher in game two for the Roadrunners.  Game two started off much like the first game with the first two innings staying tied between the two sides at 0-0.

The Roadrunners had a strong bottom of the third inning string together solid offense to take a 1-0 lead. Freshman Koryna Wright (Rancho Cucamonga, CA/Rancho Cucamonga High School) would score junior Celyn Whitt (Broomfield, CO/Legacy High School) on a fielder's choice to take the lead.

In the top of the sixth the Eagles tied the game up at one, scoring one off a double with two outs.

The score stayed 1-1 until the final inning.  After holding the Eagles in the top of the inning, senior Annika Anderson (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) hit a bomb with two outs and Megan Sansburn (/Dakota Ridge H.S. ) on base for the walk off home run, and giving her team the 3-1 victory.

Junior Ashlee Kim (Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County H.S.) led the Roadrunners from the plate, going a combined 5-7 in both games.

The Roadrunners will continue the series with the Eagles tomorrow, Sunday, April 8 beginning at 12 pm.
