Baseball: MSU Denver Falls in Doubleheader to Colorado Mesa

Roadrunners fall in doubleheader

Grand Junction, Colo.- The Metropolitan State University of Denver baseball team fell in a doubleheader to Colorado Mesa on Saturday.  The Roadrunners fell 5-2 in game one and 7-1 in game two.

MSU Denver started off strong in game one taking an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Soole was able to reach base first for his team on a catcher's interference. Donaldson then advanced him on a double to right field.  Soole scored on a ground out from a senior Cale O' Donnell, with O'Donnell earning an RBI on the play.

MSU Denver held Mesa to scoreless in the first inning but the Mavericks were able to tie the game up in the second scoring one run on two hits and went on to take a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third.

After loading the bases in the fourth, the Roadrunners stole the lead at 2-1.  However, that was the only scoring in the inning for MSU Denver.

The remainder of the game was tight, but when the Mavs were able to tie the game in the fifth, they scored two more runs in the sixth to take the game from the Roadrunners and win 5-2.

Junior Jake Kistaitis (Omaha, Nebraska/ Millard West High School) went 2-3 from the mound in the game and senior Hunter Donaldson (Fort Collins, Colo./Fossil Ridge H.S.) went 1-2.

In game two of the doubleheader the Mavericks kept in control holding the Roadrunners to just one run.

The Roadrunners were able to put on run up in the fourth to tie the game up at one.  However a big inning from Mesa allowed the Mavericks to extend the lead to 5-1.

Two more runs would seal the deal and Mesa would take the 7-1 win in the second game of the doubleheader.

The series will wrap up tomorrow at 12 noon in Grand Junction.
