@MSUDenverWSOC: No. 13 Roadrunners Upset at Dixie State

Shutout streak ends in 1-0 defeat

ST. GEORGE, Utah – Dixie State snapped MSU Denver's four-game shutout streak with a first-period goal, and held on for a 1-0 victory Friday night.

"They just came out and, to be honest, it came down to a matter of them just wanting it more," MSU Denver coach Tracy Chao said. "We came out flat and continued flat. We played poorly our first 45 minutes."

Victoria Bravo scored on a header from point-blank at the post off a corner kick in the 38th minute to give Dixie State (6-2 overall, 2-2 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) the lead. The Trailblazers held on to upset the 13th-ranked Roadrunners (6-2-1, 4-1).

"It was just a lack of marking on the back post," Chao said. "They had a free player we let get in behind us. Set pieces are game-changers. We gave up a couple of corners and they capitalized on one."

MSU Denver gave up five corner kicks – five more than its goal of none.

The Roadrunners had a couple of chances in the first half – Gabriella Gamboa (Prosper, Texas/Prosper) had a shot hit the crossbar and Makenna Brassard (Thornton, Colo./Horizon) hit a post – but for the game managed only one official shot on goal.

There were 30 fouls called in a rough and tumble match.

"They're a good team that is very organized and presses hard," Chao said. "We just didn't do a good job of executing. The second half we did a better job in terms of energy."

MSU Denver stays in Utah for a 2:30 p.m. Sunday contest against Westminster (6-3, 3-2).
