SALT LAKE CITY – It was a disappointing end to a rollercoaster game for the Metropolitan State University of Denver women's soccer team on Sunday afternoon, as the Roadrunners (6-3-1, 4-2-0 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) gave up two late goals in a 3-1 loss to Westminster College (7-2-0, 4-1-0 RMAC) on the road.
"Not one game is easy in the RMAC, especially when you go on the road and play in somebody's house," MSU Denver head coach
Tracy Chao said after the match. "We created some chances and it was a good game. When you play two good teams like (Dixie State) and Westminster, it's not going to be a high shot count. It's going to be a battle in capitalizing on the chances you get."
Westminster's Aimee Kurfurst capitalized on a scoring chance in just the ninth minute, and the Griffins took a 1-0 lead into the locker room after limiting the Roadrunners to just one total shot in the first half.
However, tides turned quickly as the whistle blew to signify the start of the second half. MSU Denver junior defender
Nayeli Baez (Fillmore, Calif./Fillmore) scored the first goal of her career just 30 seconds after the opening whistle of the second period, equalizing the score at one as the momentum swung back in the Roadrunners' direction.
"When you're down a goal there's a sense of urgency to get one back," Chao said. "We were going to get a goal back. I knew it. We had two or three chances right inside the box. When you equalize, it's about how you keep momentum."
A back-and-forth battle ensued after the goal from Baez, as the two teams traded offensive chances. Westminster's Jayde Jones capitalized on a chance in the 76
th minute, giving the Griffins the lead once again. This time, it was theirs to stay, as two MSU Denver shots failed to find their proper resting place before Westminster added another goal from Gabriella Riche in the final minute to hand MSU Denver a 3-1 loss.
"We're going through some learning curves right now," Chao said. "We've got a good week ahead of us before another road trip. We'll get back to the drawing board so we can get points on the road next week."
After disappointing results against two tough RMAC teams, the Roadrunners will look to rebound in another pair of road games next weekend. First is a matchup with Adams State (2-7-0, 1-4-0 RMAC) in Alamosa, Colo., at 7 p.m. MT Friday. A noon Sunday matchup with Fort Lewis (4-4-1, 3-2-0 RMAC) in Durango, Colo., will follow.
