RAPID CITY, S.D. – Sometimes, all it takes is one.
That was the case in Sunday's match between the Metropolitan State University of Denver men's soccer team and host South Dakota School of Mines & Technology. The Roadrunners (4-6-0, 3-3-0 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) and Hardrockers (2-7-1, 1-4-1 RMAC) combined for 17 shots, but an attempt by MSU Denver freshman
Bryan Amouyal (Ashdod, Israel/Mekif Tet) in the 41
st minute was the only one to find the net as the Roadrunners locked down a 1-0 victory on the road.
"(South Dakota School of Mines & Technology) always fights hard at home," MSU Denver head coach
Jeremy Tittle said Sunday afternoon. "It was a good result."
Amouyal's team-leading third goal of the season made up for a big opportunity he missed earlier in the match. When the Hardrockers committed a foul in their own box in the 24
th minute, Amouyal's penalty kick was saved by South Dakota Mines' goalkeeper Kyle Daledovich.
Less than 20 minute later, however, Amouyal righted his wrongs by scoring what proved to be the game-winning goal on an assist from
Yannick Schad (Munich, Germany/Theodolinden-Gymnasium). The Roadrunners protected their one-goal advantage for the remainder of the match to seal the victory, breaking a three-game losing streak and recording a shutout win for the first time since Sept. 14 against Colorado Christian.
Senior goalkeeper
James Tanner (Lake Stevens, Wash./Lake Stevens) was very effective on Sunday, stopping all five of the Hardrockers' attempts on frame. South Dakota Mines took 10 shots during the match, three more than the Roadrunners, but Tanner's strong play secured his third shutout of the season.
Amouyal is emerging as an offensive weapon for MSU Denver 10 matches into his freshman campaign, as he led the Roadrunners with four shots taken on Sunday. His 22 shots this season lead the team by a wide margin, while his goal on Sunday also vaulted him into the team lead with six points on the year.
After two weekends on the road, the Roadrunners will look to continue their winning ways at home on Friday as they face Adams State (0-7-2, 0-3-2 prior to Sunday's 1 p.m. MT match against Regis) at 7 p.m. at the Regency Athletic Complex. MSU Denver will then host CSU-Pueblo at 1 p.m. next Sunday.
"We'll be looking for a good week of training as we prepare for Adams State and CSU-Pueblo," Tittle said.
