ALAMOSA, Colo. – Now that's how you turn it on.
The MSU Denver men's soccer team gave up the tying goal with 1:39 left in regulation, but
Yannick Schad scored the golden goal just 2:16 into the overtime session to lift the Roadrunners to a 2-1 victory over Adams State in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play on Sunday.
"It's beautiful to watch when we play as the team that matches the identity that we know is us," Metropolitan State University of Denver coach
Hank Lewis said. "There isn't really an 'on' button that you can press. But it's exciting, and a little maddening, that the guys hit the 'on' button at that point."
On the game-winner,
Sam Funnell picked up a turnover in the Roadrunners' attacking third and played it to the middle to
Jaime Gutierrez, who then deftly played it wide to
Jerry Gutierrez, streaking down the right side into the box.
Then
Jerry Gutierrez sent it back to the top of the 18 for Schad, who was flying towards the goal. Schad banged it in for his second goal of the season.
"We've been talking about having numbers quickly going forward and then having numbers crashing into the box – and a guy crashing the box from the midfield scored the goal," Lewis said.
"When you crash the goal, good stuff happens."
The Roadrunners didn't have much happening for the first 64 minutes, even though they had halftime advantages in shots (9-5), shots on goal (3-1) and corner kicks (5-0).
But then senior defender
Todd Gibbs scored his second collegiate goal – and first in an MSU Denver uniform – at 64:38.
"We were not playing good soccer," Lewis said. "But Todd won a ball, then he touched it once, and then he touched it again, and then he hit a laser from at least 30 yards out."
Lewis said the ball may have never even reached shoulder height on its journey to the lower right corner of the goal.
Gibbs became the 11
th different MSU Denver player to score this season. The Roadrunners have a total of 20 goals.
MSU Denver (5-6-1 overall) improved to 3-4-1 in RMAC play, just three points out of sixth place. The top six teams in the league advance to the RMAC Tournament at season's end.
The Roadrunners, who have six regular-season games left, are away from home again next weekend, playing Friday at Colorado School of Mines (8-2-2, 6-0-2) and South Dakota Mines (2-7-1, 1-5-1).
"When we play the way we are supposed to play, we have good results," Lewis said.
