DENVER – It's safe to say that the Roadrunner volleyballers are rolling.
Metropolitan State University of Denver knocked off a high-quality opponent in front of a Homecoming crowd on Friday evening at the Auraria Event Center, sweeping away the Colorado Mesa Mavericks in dominant fashion (25-21, 25-10, 25-19).
MSU Denver (10-3, 5-0 and first place Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) hit .319 while holding Colorado Mesa (8-6, 4-2 and T-4
th RMAC) to just .088 hitting and 50 total points, reversing the momentum that had belonged to the Mavericks in both 2018 meetings.
Winners of six matches in a row and undefeated at 5-0 in RMAC play, the Roadrunners are finding an identity.
"We found out that we could just be ourselves and win tonight, instead of trying to over-adjust," head coach
Jenny Glenn said following the match. "Our goal is to make teams adjust to us."
MSU Denver relied once again on steady serving and defending the net, facets of play that the Roadrunners have excelled in all season. As a result, Colorado Mesa star middle blocker Kasie Gilfert hit just .206 on the night in comparison to the .428 season clip she boasted coming into the match. Meanwhile, CMU's .088 hitting percentage was the worst in its last 25 matches dating back to last season.
"I think we served really well to cause them to have to force (Gilfert) into uncomfortable situations," Glenn said. "She got her kills, but we also turned back a few from a blocking standpoint."
The block was on once again Friday evening, as MSU Denver out-swatted Colorado Mesa by a 9-3 margin.
Alyssa Kelling notched seven more blocks to lead the team, the fourth match in her last five with at least six rejections.
The serve-and-receive game was just as good, as the Roadrunners stymied the Mavericks with five service aces while allowing just one from the opponents. Three of those came in a dominant second set victory, when the Roadrunners jumped out to a 9-2 lead and never looked back, leading by 14 at 20-6 before finishing the frame with a 25-10 advantage. MSU Denver hit .360 in the set, while Colorado Mesa hit an even .000.
"We found it about the last five points of the first set and didn't turn back from there," Glenn said. "Our goal is to make teams adjust to us."
Alexis Benda led MSU Denver with 13 kills, posting a career-high .440 hitting percentage.
Rylee Hladky hit .500, also a career-best, adding eight kills.
Jessa Megenhardt led MSU Denver with 22 assists, while
Caiden Rexius tied a career high with a team-leading 20 digs.
The Roadrunners have conceded just three sets during the six-match winning streak.
MSU Denver will look to make Western Colorado its next victim tomorrow evening as Homecoming weekend continues. First serve is scheduled for 4 p.m. MDT at the Auraria Event Center.
