DENVER – The MSU Denver baseball team went 1-1 on Thursday, winning its first game 13-8 over Mary (N.D.), then dropping game two 7-0 to Colorado Christian.
Senior Jake Kistaitis (Omaha, Neb./Millard West) added to an already impressive start to the season in game one. The big 1st baseman had three hits and three RBIs to help lead the Roadrunners.
"We've started to really swing the bats well," Metropolitan State University of Denver coach Ryan Strain said. "We're having good at-bats and that's the important part. I've said from the very beginning that it's basically a whole new lineup from last year so they've got to get used to playing together … and as we go, that will grow."
Kistaitis wasn't the only Roadrunners player with a big day in game one. Senior Matt Malkin (Broomfield, Colo./Monarch) also added three hits and three RBIs. Freshman Zach Paschke (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mountain Vista) had three hits as well. Overall the Roadrunners had 15 hits to go along with their 13 runs.
On the mound to start the game, it was junior Branden Dehority (Chandler, Ariz./Mesquite). The right-hander went 3 ⅓ innings, allowing six runs, three earned, on four hits with two strikeouts.
Sophomore Carter Akerfelds (Littleton, Colo./Dakota Ridge) was outstanding in his three innings of work. In addition to picking up the win, the right-hander went three scoreless, one-hit innings while striking out two.
The Marauders made it interesting with an eight-run fourth inning, but other than that, the Roadrunners appeared to be in control.
"You can't ever take your foot off of the pedal," Strain said. "If you do, sometimes those baseball gods will get you, and all of a sudden the balls you're hitting are going at people and the balls they're hitting are going into open space."
Moving on to game two against Colorado Christian, it was a different story for the Roadrunners. Offense was tough to come by.
MSU Denver struggled at the plate, mustering just two hits while striking out 13 times.
The Roadrunners will be back in action on Saturday at 11 a.m. as they square off again with Mary.
