@MSUDenverBSB: Trio of Malkin, Paschke and Soole Lead Roadrunners Over Grizzlies

Matt Malkin homers twice, Logan Soole and Zach Paschke each add a solo homer in Roadrunners 6-4 victory over Adams State University.

ALAMOSA, Colo. - The MSU Denver baseball team continued its impressive run with a 6-4 victory over the Adams State University Grizzlies on Friday. The Roadrunners won their seventh straight game and improved to 13-7 on the season.

Senior standout Matt Malkin (Broomfield, Colo./Monarch) hit two home runs, increasing his season total to 13, and drove in three runs on the day. Malkin has homered in six straight games and tied the NCAA Division II lead for home runs with his two on Friday.

Malkin finished the day 2-for-3 with two runs, three RBIs and a walk. The senior catcher leads the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference in home runs (13), RBI (36), total bases (76) and slugging percentage (1.056). He sits in the top 10 in batting average (.444), on-base percentage (.481), hits (32) and runs scored (23).

Sophomore Logan Soole (Louisville, Colo./Monarch) and freshman Zach Paschke (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mountain Vista) also added home runs of their own on Friday. Soole hit a solo shot in the second inning, his sixth of the season, to put the Roadrunners up 2-0.

Paschke hit the first home run of his collegiate career in the fourth inning, extending the Roadrunners' lead to 4-0. He was just a single short of the cycle, going 3-for-5 with two runs and the RBI on his homer.

"(That was) a game we needed," coach Ryan Strain said. "We needed to play well. We had some big hits. Obviously the four solo home runs were really big for us in key situations. Austin Stone (Arvada, Colo./Faith Christian) did a great job throwing the ball."

Like Strain said, sophomore Austin Stone (Arvada, Colo./Faith Christian) was solid, per usual. The right-hander went five innings, giving up just two runs on four hits with two strikeouts and no walks.

A weather delay in the sixth inning was all that kept Stone from continuing the game. He had thrown just 56 pitches to that point.

Following the delay, senior TJ Egloff (Brighton, Colo./Brighton) entered the game for MSU Denver. Egloff threw three innings and gave up two unearned runs on three hits and struck out three Grizzlies.

Senior left-hander Taylor Petersen (Gilbert, Ariz./Highland) entered the game in the ninth and struck out two of three batters he faced to earn the save for the Roadrunners and secure a victory.

"It was unfortunate that we had the hour delay and didn't want to put (Stone) back out there because he was cruising," Strain said. "Egloff came in and did a good job and then Petersen came in and finished it off, so all three of those guys really threw the ball well."

The Roadrunners will continue their series with Adams State on Saturday. The two squads will play a doubleheader, with first pitch for game one scheduled for noon in Alamosa.

"Overall, it was a good win," Strain said. "Got a win on a Friday and we'll have to get back at it tomorrow."
