MARYVILLE, Mo. – Playing for the third time in three days in three locations, the Metropolitan State University of Denver men's and women's tennis teams both dropped duals Wednesday at Northwest Missouri State.
The men lost 4-2, while the women fell 5-2. Both Roadrunners teams had won matches against Newman (Kan.) in Wichita on Monday and against Rockhurst (Mo.) in Kansas City on Tuesday.
The Northwest Missouri State women are ranked No. 19 in Division II and No. 3 in the Central Region. The Bearcats are sixth in their region and No. 48 overall.
"It's clearly disappointing that we didn't get the result today," MSU Denver coach
Josh Graetz said. "I thought both teams competed really hard against really good teams, but it didn't quite go our way.
"I'm not satisfied with the result and I know the players aren't either. This match was really motivating for our players knowing we can match up with the best teams in the nation."
MSU Denver's women won two of three doubles matches to pick up one point, while
Helena Steenberg won her No. 3 singles contest 6-2, 6-2 over Marta Ferrando. Steenberg had teamed with
Alex Pessoa to win at No. 1 doubles.
The Roadrunners' men got wins from
Joey Tscherne at No. 1 singles and
Alejandro Martinez-Morilla at No. 3. Tscherne and
Mateo Besada picked up a win in No. 1 doubles.
The MSU Denver men drop to 4-8 overall while the women's setback brings them to 7-9. Northwest's men improve to 8-6, and the women climb to 11-3.
The Roadrunners' Thursday duals at Lindenwood (Mo.) have been cancelled due to expected poor weather. Both MSU Denver teams will play host to CSU-Pueblo on Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Regency Athletic Complex.
