COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Zach Walsh had three hits and drove in four runs Saturday to lead MSU Denver, ranked No. 25 in the Perfect Game Division II national rankings, to a 5-2 victory over the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs.
After UCCS scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning, Walsh tied things up with a two-run double in the top of the second.
Then, in the fourth inning, Walsh put the Roadrunners ahead to stay with a two-run homer, his seventh homer of the season.
Logan Soole added his 11
th homer, and second of the series, in the fifth.
"We got some big hits in some big situations," Metropolitan State University of Denver coach
Ryan Strain said.
That was more than enough for
Branden Dehority (3-1), who pitched into the ninth inning for a second straight start, allowing two runs on seven hits – with one walk and three strikeouts – in 8 1/3 innings.
With two runners on base to bring the tying run to the plate in the ninth, MSU Denver turned to
Eric Cox, who retired the two batters he faced to pick up his second save.
"We got a great start out of Dehority, and Cox was able to come in and close it down," Strain said. "Two good pitching performances when we really needed it."
By salvaging the finale of the four-game series, MSU Denver (26-14) regained third place in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference at 19-9. UCCS (26-16) dropped into a fourth-place tie at 18-10.
"It was a big win for us," Strain said. "We needed that after a tough couple of days. The guys really bounced back and played well."
The Roadrunners play the top two teams in the league in their final two regular-season weekends, wrapping up at Colorado School of Mines on the first weekend of May after playing host to nationally-ranked RMAC leader Colorado Mesa this weekend at the Regency Athletic Complex.
Up first, though, is a home matchup with Division I Northern Colorado on Tuesday night at 6. MSU Denver defeated the Bears 17-6 in a March meeting in Greeley, Colo.
