@MSUDenverTennis: Women Win RMAC Title, Men Keep Hopes Alive

Both teams cruise to victories over CSU-Pueblo

PUEBLO, Colo. – The MSU Denver women wrapped up a third straight RMAC regular-season championship, and the men kept their postseason hopes alive Tuesday with dual tennis victories at Colorado State University-Pueblo.

The Roadrunners women claimed a 7-0 victory over the ThunderWolves to finish 3-0 in league play. The same teams will meet again Friday in the semifinals of the RMAC tournament in Grand Junction, Colo.

The MSU Denver men, meanwhile, earned a 5-2 victory to stay in the hunt for a berth in the NCAA Division II South Central regional tournament. The Roadrunners (9-8) are ranked fifth in the region, while only four teams will advance to postseason play. MSU Denver will now wait until May 7 to hear about its postseason fate. The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference doesn't sponsor a championship in men's tennis.

"The guys executed really well in doubles today," Metropolitan State University of Denver coach Josh Graetz said. "I thought that made a big difference going into singles, considering we lost the doubles point last time we played them (a 4-3 win). Today was also a big win for our hopes of postseason."

Joey Tscherne (10-6), ranked No. 51 in Division II, extended his winning streak at No. 1 singles to eight with a 6-1, 6-4 decision over Daniel Garcia.

He also teamed with Mateo Besada for a No. 1 doubles victory, while Besada won at No. 4 singles 6-4, 6-3 over James Ryan. Daniel Llorente won matches at both No. 3 doubles and No. 2 singles, improving to 14-7 in singles.

The Roadrunners women won all five singles matches that were contested and split the two doubles matches. CSU-Pueblo had five players competing and defaulted at both No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles.

Mackenzie Hotan didn't lose a game all day, teaming with Olivia Kaiser for a 6-0 win at No. 2 doubles before taking a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles to improve to 8-2. Kaiser won her No. 3 singles match as well.

Helena Steenberg improved to 18-5 in singles with her victory in the No. 2 position as she outlasted Kali Hamilton 4-6, 6-4, 14-12.

"The women took care of business today," Graetz said. "They continue to battle through adversity and come through stronger. We now have to recover and regroup before we play in the conference tournament against the same opponent."
