LAKEWOOD, Colo. – You can't win 'em all in baseball, even when it sometimes feels like you're going to.
What you can do, though, is respond with confidence when you experience defeat.
The Metropolitan State University of Denver baseball team showcased that on Sunday against Colorado Christian. After suffering an 8-4 loss in the first game of Sunday's doubleheader at All Star Park – just the second loss in 18 games for the Roadrunners – MSU Denver regrouped in game two with a 10-3 victory thanks to another strong outing from starting hurler
TJ Egloff.
"TJ was great," MSU Denver coach
Ryan Strain said Sunday evening. "He came in and just got after it. He filled up the strike zone. He was really on and really competed. He gave us a great start when we needed it. It was good to bounce back after the first one."
Egloff pitched all seven innings of game two for the Roadrunners, scattering five hits while giving up three earned runs and punching out seven Cougars. He walked just one batter, improving to 1-1 on the season with the win while lowering his season ERA to 2.73.
After some offensive scuffles in game one, MSU Denver (23-9, 16-4 and 1
st Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) opened the scoring in the third inning of game two with an RBI single from
Chase Anderson. Colorado Christian (9-24, 4-16 and T-9
th RMAC) responded with an RBI groundout and two-run homer in the bottom of the frame, putting the Roadrunners down 3-1.
Jake Kistaitis delivered a two-run single in the fourth inning to even the score at 3-3, continuing his hot streak after a three-run homer in the opening game. The senior first baseman was 7-for-14 with two homers and seven RBIs in the series, serving as the catalyst for the MSU Denver offense.
Anderson came through with the go-ahead hit in the fifth, hitting his seventh home run of the season – a roundtripper of the two-run variety – to put the Roadrunners ahead 5-3. Anderson had a rare hitless game in the opener (ending an 18-game hitting streak that included 15 multi-hit games), but turned around in the second game with his 10
th multi-hit game in MSU Denver's last 12 while driving in three runs. He now has seven homers and 30 RBIs in 2019 to go with his .373 batting average.
From there, it was all MSU Denver.
The Roadrunners tacked on one run in the sixth and and four in the seventh, highlighted by a two-run single from
Ty Lightley to make it 10-3.
Offensive production was spread evenly throughout the lineup in the second game to lead to a true team win. Anderson, Lightley and
Zach Paschke had two hits apiece, while six other Roadrunners had one each.
Owen Reynolds was clutch offensively for the second straight day.
"
Owen Reynolds did a nice job," Strain said. "He came in and had a couple key at-bats with a hit-and-run and a bunt."
Kistaitis' three-run jack and an RBI single from
Zach Walsh provided the only offense in the opener for MSU Denver, which tied its lowest offensive output since March 9 in the loss. CCU came up big with a five-run fifth inning to go ahead 5-3 before winning 8-4.
"Overall, it was tough to lose the first one but we were able to bounce back and win the series which is important," Strain said. "I thought the guys played hard all weekend. Hopefully we'll keep it rolling as we move into next week."
The Roadrunners will host Dixie State (23-11, 13-7 and T-3rd RMAC) in a four-game set next weekend at Regency Athletic Complex. Game one is set for Friday at 6 p.m. MDT, while a doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m. MDT Saturday. MSU Denver will wrap up the series with the Trailblazers with a single game at noon on Sunday.
