@MSUDenverTennis: Roadrunners Break Streak, Score Convincing Win Over UNK

Lopers had won four years in a row and 11 straight dating to 2009

DENVER – Now that's how to end a losing streak.

The MSU Denver women's tennis team, which had lost duals to the University of Nebraska at Kearney for four straight years and in 11 consecutive matchups dating to 2009, rolled to a 7-0 win over the Lopers on Thursday at the Regency Athletic Complex.

"I'm really proud of the women today," Metropolitan State University of Denver coach Josh Graetz said. "They came out and competed really hard."

The Roadrunners won the doubles point by taking two of three matches, with Brooklyn Ross and Mackenzie Hotan combining for a 6-3 win over Fidan Ibrahimova and Trang Tran at No. 2, and Tabitha Porter and Kayla Myburgh picking up a 6-4 win over Brooklyn Hunter and Claire Neil at No. 3.

Then in singles Porter and Ainsley Winterrowd, at No. 1 and No. 6, respectively, were both forced to go to super-set wins, but the other four players won in straight sets.

Porter outlasted Zhanel Turarbek 6-3, 4-6, 10-8 and Winterrowd topped Neil 4-6, 6-3, 10-5. Ross won 6-1, 6-4 over Anastasia Kuzevanova at No. 2, Helena Steenberg beat Tran 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3, Gala Costello topped Ibrhimova 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4, and Myburgh defeated Hunter 6-3, 6-2.

MSU Denver and UNK didn't play one another in 2013 or 2014, but typically played twice a year prior to that when UNK was a member of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. It was the Roadrunners' first shutout of the Lopers in 20 meetings, dating to 2004.

MSU Denver has three more important regional matchups ahead, as it heads to the Colorado State University-Pueblo Duals this weekend. On Friday the Roadrunners play Dallas Baptist at 1 p.m. and Fort Hays State (Kan.) at 5 p.m., and on Saturday they'll face Newman (Kan.) at 4:30 p.m.

"The exciting part is we were able to blank a really solid team, but I still think we have some areas to work on," Graetz said.
