ARLINGTON, Texas – Brooklyn Ross knocked off the tournament's top seed before bowing out in the quarterfinals, while Kayla Myburgh and Gala Castello reached the finals in 'B' doubles, highlighting MSU Denver's day at the ITA South Central Regionals.
 
Ross defeated Valentina Gonzalez of Angelo State (Texas), the favorite in the 64-player 'A' singles draw, 6-4, 6-1 in her first match of the day, but couldn't get past Ashley Penshorn of St. Mary's (Texas) in the quarterfinals in a 6-4, 6-2 setback.
 
"Brooklyn had a huge win over the No. 1 seed and is continuing to play high level tennis," Metropolitan State University of Denver coach Josh Graetz said.

Myburgh and Castello teamed up for an 8-3 win over Julia Rauer and Daniela Koleva of Texas A&M-Kingsville before losing to Anna Claire Gerletti and Brooke Brewer of Texas-Tyler in the final 8-4. Gerletti and Brewer had knocked out another Roadrunners duo, Ainsley Winterrowd and Sara Iverson, 8-3 in the semifinals.
 
Also Friday, second-seeded Tabitha Porter of MSU Denver, upset in the first round, won two more matches in the A consolation draw. Porter beat Melany Opolz of Cameron (Okla.) 2-6, 7-5, 10-5 and then topped Ema Segatila of Midwestern State (Texas) 6-2, 7-5.
 
Also in the 'A' consolation draw, Helena Steenberg won a match defeating Julianna Garcia of Cameron 7-5, 4-6, 10-6 before losing to Charli Delmonico of St. Mary's 3-6, 6-4, 10-5.
 
Steenberg and Porter, playing in the 'A' doubles consolation draw, picked up an 8-3 win over Alex Lopez and Opolz of Cameron and then earned an 8-6 victory over another Cameron duo Pilar Jurena and Garcia.
 
"I thought we executed as a team better today," Graetz said. "Overall we've improved as a team this weekend."
  
In the 'B' singles draw, the Roadrunners' Sara Iverson reached the semifinals with a 7-5, 6-0 win over Marijana Jovanovich of Texas-Tyler before dropping a 6-1, 6-0 decision to Maria Garcia of St. Mary's.
 
In the 'B' singles consolation draw, Winterrowd defeated Petra Csizmadia of Arkansas-Fort Smith 6-2, 7-5 but lost to Stephanie Baerman of Texas A&M-Kingsville 6-0, 6-0 in the semifinals.
