DENVER – Different day. Different team. Different atmosphere.
Same result.
Pretty much anyway.
The afternoon after a Friday night thrill ride for a come-from-behind, five-set win over nemesis Colorado Mesa, No. 2 MSU Denver showed up for a Saturday afternoon matinee against Westminster and cruised to a 3-0 (25-16, 25-18, 25-12) sweep.
"Last night was such a tough night, and our goal was to bring that energy back into this match," outside hitter
Kaylee Corsentino said. "One of our goals was to make our own energy and to keep it consistent throughout."
Rather than having a ho-hum experience against a second-division team, the Roadrunners got what they were looking for against the Griffins.
"Anybody across the net can come at us right now," MSU Denver coach
Jenny Glenn said. "We have a target on our back, so we know we have to be ready to go. We wanted to perform better than we did against Fort Lewis here a couple of weeks ago. We wanted to create on own rhythm on our side of the net."
While
Avaline Lai (12 kills, .500 hitting) and
Rylee Hladky (10 kills, .529 hitting) were scintillating, the Roadrunners got contributions across the board while hitting .320 as a team. MSU Denver had 10 service aces and eight blocks while winning its 10
th straight match – the program's best streak since 2017 – and improving to 11-2 overall and 6-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
"Jenny's biggest thing was coming out strong, coming out hard and fast," libero
Ashlyn Cianciulli said. "Coming off such an intense match and then playing a team that has a slower pace, it's easy to fall into it and play at their pace. So creating our own speed and pace was the biggest thing for us."
Corsentino, in and out of the lineup based on success and matchups throughout the season, capped off her best weekend of the season with seven kills, four blocks and two service aces.
"She's worked really hard the last couple weeks to iron some things out and sharpen up some points of her game and we saw the result of that this weekend," Glenn said. "I'm proud of her for her mindset and how she's been able to grind in some areas."
Middle blocker
Maddy Williams, the breakout star of Friday's win, joined Corsentino in the starting rotation and had four blocks of her own, including one solo.
"It's important with our depth and the options that we have to trust those options and change things up," Glenn said.
Said Cianciulli: "It's really exciting to have 19 people on our team, because all 19 of us can come into the game and change the momentum. Maddy and Kaylee did a really good job of saying, 'OK, this is my position, this is what I'm going to do and I'm going to do it well.' Anybody on our team can do that, and it's really cool to see."
Cianciulli had a career-best four service aces,
Amela Qershia set 26 assists and extended her streak of serving at least one ace to 12 matches, and
Ember Canty had six kills on .545 hitting while added four blocks.
"It's awesome that we have so much depth on the bench on both sides," Corsentino said. "If someone is having a tough time or is getting targeted, we have someone to go to. It challenges our starters."
Said Glenn: "We just continue to have different experiences every time we step on the court. Every experience we have grows our pile and shows us what we're capable of doing. It builds confidence and it builds conviction and this weekend was a good example of that."
