ALAMOSA, Colo. – Bryson Chiles had assists on two set pieces, including
Aidan Bates' game-winning goal off a corner kick in the 71
st minute, as MSU Denver defeated Adams State 2-1 Friday for the Roadrunners' second straight victory.
MSU Denver improved to 6-8-1 overall and 3-4 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference while sustaining its bid to move into the top six in the league to qualify for the conference tournament. The Roadrunners will continue their quest Sunday, with a 2:30 p.m. game against Fort Lewis.
Chiles, who now has a team-high six assists, earned a corner kick and then took it himself with the game tied 1-1. His service went to
Alec Nguyen, who then headed an attempt off the intersection of the left post and crossbar. The ball then went to the feet of Bates, who tapped in for his team-best eighth goal of the season at 70:36.
"It was a great delivery from Bryson, and Alec timed his header perfectly," MSU Denver coach
Nick Kirchhof said. "Aidan was there to make sure it went in."
Chiles' free kick to
Aaron Biggerstaff led to the game's opening goal at 26:14. Chiles sent the kick into the box from 25 yards out and, after it deflected off an Adams State player, Biggerstaff took over and delivered the ball into the lower left corner. It was Biggerstaff's second goal of the season.
Adams State tied the game on a penalty kick at 37:52.
"I think we came out initially and played some great stuff, scored a good goal and were on top," Kirchhof said. "The penalty decision made it a bit tougher, and we had to weather a couple flurries, but then we kept creating chances."
Each team put five shots on goal, with MSU Denver having a slight edge in shots (11-10) and corner kicks (2-1).
Ross Miller (6-7-1) made five saves for the Roadrunners and has only given up scores on penalty kicks in the last two games.
"We just needed to get the win, and now all focus goes to Sunday in a great matchup with Fort Lewis," Kirchhof said.
