GOLDEN, Colo. – Against league power Colorado School of Mines, everything went MSU Denver's way on Sunday.
Except the final score.
Despite clear statistical advantages in shots (16-5), shots on goal (9-2) and corner kicks (7-0) and the unofficial advantage in controlling the game, the MSU Denver women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 road decision Sunday to the preseason Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference favorites who are receiving votes in the national Division II poll.
"It's probably one of our best performances in the sense of really sticking to the game plan and executing," MSU Denver coach
Kat Mertz said. "Clearly Colorado School of Mines is a good team with great players, and we knew that they were good at countering and that proved to be the difference."
Landry Corbett's goal at 79:48 was the game's only score.
"I thought we had good tempo," Mertz said. "We wanted to dictate play and stretch them, and clearly their goalkeeper is exceptional and made some huge saves. We're disappointed, but we're hopeful heading into our next game and the games that follow because we are starting to connect and play well, and we're hungry."
Katy Coats,
Annie Rolf and
Riley Ostler all had two shots on goal for MSU Denver, which dropped to 5-2-2 overall and 2-2 in the RMAC, but Sierra Roth had eight saves for the Orediggers (7-1-2, 4-0).
"It's OK to be disappointed and frustrated, but now we have to use this to press even harder to make sure that we're dialed in and committed to everything we need to do on the field and off the field," Mertz said. "October is really hard in women's soccer – there are a lot of games and you have to be committed and pay attention to detail.
"But we're excited to get back on the field for practice Tuesday to get right back at it."
