DENVER – MSU Denver wraps up the non-conference portion of its men's basketball schedule this weekend as Concordia-St. Paul (Minn.) and Benedictine Mesa (Ariz.) come to the Auraria Event Center for games Saturday at 6 p.m. and Sunday at 4 p.m., respectively
"We have two really good teams coming in," MSU Denver coach Michael said. "Both games should be really competitive, and we're looking forward to the opportunity."
MSU Denver is 4-0 thus far, while Concordia-St. Paul is 1-4 and Benedictine Mesa is 2-3. Both Roadrunners opponents play at Regis the day before playing MSU Denver.
The Roadrunners, off to their best start since the 2014-15 season, have been led individually by
Laolu Oke and
Miles Gibson – each of whom is averaging a double-double.
The 6-foot-8 Oke averages 18.0 points and is second in NCAA Division II with 14.0 rebounds per game. The 6-6 Gibson adds 16.8 points and 10.5 rebounds per game.
"They've shown the ability and the consistency to play at a high level," Bahl said. "There are things they need to work on, but their ability to rebound the basketball … when you have two guys who are that prolific rebounding, it's a really good thing."
In an 89-52 win Tuesday over Maine-Fort Kent, Oke and Gibson helped MSU Denver pull down 21 offensive rebounds, a high total that is a blessing and a curse.
"That's not a stat I really like, because it means we missed a lot of shots, but our ability to go get the ball is one of our best attributes," Bahl said.
Through four games though, the Roadrunners have demonstrated that they can be excellent defensively and on the glass. They lead the RMAC in rebounds per game (46.3), scoring defense (57.2 points per game) and field goal percentage defense (36.1), ranking sixth, seventh and eighth, respectively, in those categories in Division II. They are also first in the RMAC and 17
th in the country in 3-point percentage defense (25.6).
The final piece to the puzzle would be offensive execution – the Roadrunners are shooting just 41.2 percent from the field and 27.8 from 3.
Signs of progress were evident Tuesday, as
Isaac Lungren hit four 3-pointers, while
Chris Simpson and
Jake Chrisman each hit two.
"I think we're getting there," Lungren said. "I think once conference play actually starts, I think we'll be exactly where we need to be. We're a really talented team. I think we're really deep. We can make a run in the RMAC."
