LAS VEGAS, N.M. – The MSU Denver baseball team scored 21 runs as it went on to beat New Mexico Highlands 21-7 to close out the weekend series with a four-game sweep.
"I'm very pleased with how we played this weekend," MSU Denver coach
Ryan Strain said. "Our offense swung the bats well every game, and it took a total team effort to get the sweep."
The Roadrunners exploded on offense to start the game by scoring six runs in each of the first two innings. Catcher
Alex Gonzales had a career day at the plate by crushing his first two collegiate home runs in the first two innings of the game. Gonzales went back-to-back with
Dylan Nelson in the first inning, and then hit a three-run home run in the second. He finished the day 3-for-5 with six RBIs.
The Roadrunners hit a total of five home runs on the day with
Chase Anderson and freshman
Jackson VanZee adding to the home run parade. Anderson's home run came to leadoff the second inning and helped add to his season-opening 16-game hitting streak.
VanZee entered the game in the eighth inning to replace Nelson, and he belted his first collegiate home run in the top of the ninth to give the Roadrunners their final run of the game.
Bill Ralston cooled down a bit at the plate for the final game, but he still finished with a two-hit day and earned another RBI to bring his weekend RBI total to 13.
Although the hitting was fantastic, the Roadrunners' pitching staff put on another spectacular performance on the mound. They held the Cowboys scoreless through the first seven innings.
"Highlands is a tough place to play, and it's not easy to get four wins down there," Strain s\aid. "Their team was swinging the bats really well before the weekend and our pitchers did a great job against them."
Jimmy Dobrash earned his third win of the season, throwing five scoreless innings and only giving up three hits while striking out eight.
Zach Sundine relieved Dobrash and threw a scoreless sixth, and
Gannon Reiswig continued the stellar pitching in the seventh by striking out the side. The Roadrunners' pitching staff finished with 15 strikeouts on the day.
"From the pitching staff to the position players, they all did their part," Strain said.
The Roadrunners will look to continue their winning streak against RMAC competition on Friday as they take on Colorado Christian at the Regency Athletic Complex at 1 p.m.
