@MSUDenverWSOC: Late Goals Push Westminster Past Roadrunners

Annie Rolf had tie the game 1-1 with her second goal of the season

DENVER – Westminster scored two late goals to break open a tie game and earned a 3-1 win over MSU Denver on Saturday night in women's soccer.

Westminster compiled a decisive edge in shots (21-6), shots on goal (10-5) and corner kicks (9-0) while improving to 3-0-2 on the season.

The Griffins scored in the seventh minute, but MSU Denver (1-3) regrouped an eventually tied it on Annie Rolf's second goal of the season at 31:30.

"We struggled to handle their pressure," MSU Denver interim coach Bonnie Young said. "The speed of the game caught us off-guard, especially in the first 25 minutes. We were able to get control towards the end of the first half and get the goal. Going into halftime at 1-1 was a good scenario for us.

"But kind of the same thing happened in the second half. We struggled to relieve the pressure. There were moments where we had some scoring opportunities and didn't take advantage of them. Had we gotten one of those I think it could have calmed things down a little bit, but because we had so much difficulty getting out of our defensive half, we had an uphill battle."

Westminster scored at 78:41 (Brynnae Braun) and 87:09 (Rebecca Wheeler) both off long free kicks into the box by Dominique Estrada.

"They were probably preventable in different ways," Young said. "Set-piece goals are haunting us this year."
