@MSUDenverTennis: Tough Midwestern State Holds Serve Against Roadrunners

MSU Denver plays a number of competitive matches but falls short of victory

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The MSU Denver men's and women's tennis teams ran into a talented Midwestern State (Texas) program in their dual matches Sunday.

The women walked away with one win, but suffered losses in two three-set matches that could have gone either way and ending their day with a 6-1 loss. The men also lost a few tight matches, but ultimately lost 7-0.

"The women's match was a little closer than the score may show," MSU Denver coach Josh Graetz said. "We had opportunities in doubles, and a couple three-set matches that didn't go our way. We need to do a better job of executing in the big points."

The women had a strong performance from Gala Castello, who walked away with the only point for either side. Castello defeated her No. 4 singles opponent, Emilija Visic, 6-2, 6-4.

Brooklyn Ross and Lilly Stienemeier battled back after dropping the first set to force their matches into a third set, but it wasn't enough to hold back Midwestern State's Nos. 1 and 5 singles players. Ross fell in a 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 decision, while Stienemeier was defeated 6-1, 4-6, 1-0 (4).

The men almost snuck away with a team point through their doubles matches after Jack McDermott and Jean-Loup Auzias put on a dominating performance at No. 3s with a 6-1 win. Mateo Besada and Daniel Llorente were the tiebreaking match at No. 1, but lost in a hard fought battle 7-5.

"The men had a chance to clinch doubles and didn't take the opportunity," Graetz said. "That could have changed the outlook of the match. Credit to Midwestern though."

Alejandro Martinez-Morilla, at No. 4 singles, forced a third set, but was beaten by Midwestern State's Alexandre Crepy losing 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.

Jack McDermott almost forced a third set by putting up a tough battle in the second set of his match, but ultimately suffered a 6-3, 7-6 loss at No. 2.

The Roadrunners will finish a five-day road trip Monday with a stop in Lawton, Okla. to take on Cameron at 8 a.m. MST.
