LAWTON, Okla. – Both the MSU Denver men's and women's tennis teams dropped the final dual of their five-day road trip, this time in matchups at Cameron (Okla.).
The women put up a fight against an undefeated Cameron team before falling 4-2, while the men fell to the Aggies 4-0.
"Another match that slipped away for the women," MSU Denver coach
Josh Graetz said. "We're playing high-level tennis, we just need every player to execute in the right moments."
The women battled early by forcing a decisive No. 3 doubles match after
Brooklyn Ross and
Isabel Heras won their No. 1 doubles match 6-4.
Marie Cool and
Gala Castello battled in the No. 3 match but ultimately lost 7-5.
The women bounced back quickly in the singles matches with
Brooklyn Ross and
Helena Steenberg bringing them to a 2-1 lead going into the final four matches of the day. But Cameron's Nos. 3, 4, and 5 singles players picked up wins and the Aggies earned the final three points.
Isabel Heras battled in the No. 3 singles match by starting off strong and winning the first set, but eventually lost in a tight third set with a score of 6-4, 4-6, 5-7.
Gala Castello also put the pressure on her No. 4 singles opponent losing a nail biter 7-6, 6-4.
"I knew the doubles point was going to be important in our chances of winning today," coach
Josh Graetz said. "Unfortunately, it didn't go our way."
The men suffered their fifth loss on the year, and they struggled to win a set against Cameron (3-4).
Jack McDermott and
Jeanloup Auzias won 6-4 to tie the doubles score at 1-1, but
Billy McDermott and
Alejandro Martinez-Morilla lost a close match 6-4, which gave Cameron the doubles point.
Jack McDermott,
Daniel Llorente, and
Mateo Besada faced tough singles competition at Nos. 1, 2 and 3 singles, and all three were not able to win a set which closed out the dual.
"We just ran out of gas in singles," Graetz said.
Up next, the women will host Dominican (Calif.) on Thursday at the Denver Tennis Park in their first-ever Pacific West Conference match, and both the men and women are scheduled to will host Dallas Baptist on Friday.
