COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Rebecca Gonzales homered in each game and
Destinee Lopez pitched a second-game shutout as MSU Denver swept UCCS 13-5 and 8-0 Saturday in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference softball doubleheader, ending each game after five innings due to the eight-run rule.
MSU Denver (16-6 overall, 14-4 RMAC) has won 14 straight league games while going 16-2 overall in its last 18 games.
MSU Denver coach
Annie Van Wetzinga was concerned about the propensity for Mountain Lion Field to surrender home runs, but her team alleviated those fears by hitting three in the opening game – with
Haley Doughty and
Kayla Banks joining Gonzales in leaving the yard.
"Gonzales had a really good day," Van Wetzinga said. "She's been a little off the past few games but worked hard at practice this week, made adjustments, and had a big day for us."
The Roadrunners scored two in the first, including an RBI single by Gonzales, but UCCS tied it with a homer in the bottom of the first.
But
Mackenzie Jamieson broke it open with a three-run double in the top of the second and the Roadrunners cruised from there. Gonzales' three-run homer in the fourth made it 9-2, Banks' homer made it 10-2, and Doughty's two-run shot in the fifth made it 13-2.
The Roadrunners had 15 hits in the opener – matching their second-highest total of the season – including three by
Megan Sansburn.
Darby McGhee (9-2) went the distance for the win, surrendering only two earned runs while striking out six.
In the second game, Lopez improved to 6-1 with her second shutout of the season. Lopez fanned seven.
"Both of our pitchers threw well," Van Wetzinga said. "Even when they gave up a walk or hit, they bounced back right away with quality pitches and outs. It's not an easy field to pitch at so that was great to see as well."
Kassi Reiger had an RBI single in the second, then Gonzales homered in the third. Jamieson broke it open again, this time with a two-run double in the fifth that made it 5-0.
Gonzales and Jamieson each had five RBIs on the day – Gonzales was 3-for-4 while Jamieson was 4-for-7.
Sansburn was 5-for-7 and scored four runs and Doughty was 3-for-6 with four RBIs.
"I loved how our offense showed up today," Van Wetzinga said. "Up and down the lineup we were making adjustments, hitting the ball hard to both sides of the field, and being aggressive."
The series concludes Sunday with an 11 a.m. doubleheader.
