COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – MSU Denver ran its Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference to 16 games while winning for the 18
th time in 20 games on Sunday in a doubleheader sweep at UCCS.
The Roadrunners ended all four games of the series sweep early due to the eight-run rule, defeating the Mountain Lions 10-2 and 12-2 Sunday in games that were halted after six innings.
"I think the most satisfying thing is that we didn't let up," MSU Denver coach
Annie Van Wetzinga said. "Once we made adjustments and got the scoring going, we continued with quality at bats and extending the lead."
MSU Denver (18-6 overall, 16-4 RMAC) fell behind in the first inning of each game Sunday, but recovered quickly.
The Roadrunners took control of the opener with a six-run third inning that included a game-tying two-run homer by
Shelby Robb and
Kami Grammerstorf's go-ahead two-run double.
Robb was 3-for-3 with three RBIs, while Grammerstorf and
Olivia Dampier also drove in three runs each.
Darby McGhee (10-2) picked up her second complete-game win of the weekend, allowing two runs on three hits with two walks and five strikeouts.
Destinee Lopez (7-1) followed suit with her second complete-game win of the weekend in the second game, allowing two runs on nine hits, with two walks and five strikeouts.
"I thought Darby and Destinee did a great job this weekend," Van Wetzinga said. "It's not an easy field to pitch at, and they both gave solid performances all weekend."
In the second game, after giving up a first-inning run, the Roadrunners rallied for four runs in the second inning and never looked back.
Grammerstorf again put the Roadrunners ahead to stay, with an RBI single up the middle.
Rebecca Gonzales had a three-run double in the fourth to make it 8-1, and
Ari Valdez had a pinch-hit homer to make it 9-1.
McGhee had two hits and drove in two runs, while Mackenzie Jamison added two hits and drove in a run.
For the day, McGhee and Robb each went 4-for-6, while Gonzales and Jamieson were both 4-for-7.
"Up and down the lineup we had players come up with big hits and tough at bats," Van Wetzinga said. "It was fun to watch our offense click this weekend."
