Robb homers in each game, but Colorado Christian wins twice in its final at-bat

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LAKEWOOD, Colo. – In a showdown between the second- and third-place teams in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference softball standings, MSU Denver suffered two losses to by a total of three runs to Colorado Christian on Wednesday, falling 7-5 and 3-2.

Colorado Christian scored the winning run in its final at-bat in each game.

"Both games were clean, good softball," MSU Denver coach Annie Van Wetzinga said. "CCU was just better than us in the big moments. They have experience, and with that experience comes good leadership and that paid off for them today."

Freshman Shelby Robb homered in each game for the Roadrunners (18-8 overall, 16-6 RMAC) who had won a school in-season record-tying 16 straight league games while winning 18 of 20 overall.

Megan Sansburn also homered in the first game, a two-run shot in the third inning that gave MSU Denver a 2-1 lead.

Then Robb's two-run homer in the fifth put the Roadrunners back out front at 5-4.

But the Cougars (19-6, 18-3) scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth.

"I liked the way we attacked offensively the first game," Van Wetzinga said. "We were jumping on pitches and being tough outs. We didn't carry that over the way I would've liked to have seen. We didn't have productive at-bats when baserunners were on. It's too bad we couldn't generate more offense to back up a really good (pitching) performance by Destinee (Lopez)."

Robb hit a solo homer in the first inning of the second game, but Colorado Christian tied it in the bottom half of the inning.

The Roadrunners scored an unearned run in the fourth inning to take the lead, but Colorado Christian tied the game with a fifth-inning homer, then used a double and a single in the bottom of the seventh to win it.

MSU Denver takes two days off ahead of a four-game Saturday-Sunday series with Fort Lewis, then plays another doubleheader at Colorado Christian on April 21.

"What's nice is we get a couple days to reset, get ready to play Fort Lewis at home this weekend, and then try to attack CCU better next week," Van Wetzinga said.
