SURPRISE, Ariz. – The MSU Denver men's tennis program was swept in its Pacific West Conference Tournament debut on Thursday by tournament No. 3 seed and national No. 10 Hawaii Pacific.
The men struggled early in the match dropping the doubles point quickly, and they were not able to regain momentum as the day went on.
"The guys lost a tough match," MSU Denver coach
Josh Graetz said. "It was much closer than the scores show, but Hawaii Pacific is a really solid team."
Jack McDermott and
David Kijak played together for the first time at No. 2 doubles, and couldn't find the chemistry they needed in losing 6-0.
Mateo Besada and
Daniel Llorente were also defeated at No. 1 doubles, clinching the doubles point for the Sharks.
Both Besada and
Alejandro Martinez-Morilla were able to force a tiebreak in the first set of their singles matches, but ultimately Hawaii Pacific earned three singles points by defeating
Jack McDermott at NO. 2,
David Kijak at No. 4 and
Billy McDermott at No. 6.
The sixth-seeded Roadrunners dropped into the consolation bracket and can still finish as high as fifth. They'll play No. 7 seed Biola (Calif.) at 1 p.m. MST (2 p.m. Denver) on Friday. MSU Denver won a regular-season meeting between the teams 4-3 last month.
"We are excited to get after it tomorrow," Graetz said.
