SURPRISE, Ariz. – The MSU Denver men's tennis team lost a heartbreaking doubles point and wasn't able to regain the momentum Friday, falling 4-0 to Biola (Calif.) at the Pacific West Conference Tournament.
The Roadrunners drop into Saturday's seventh-place match, where they'll face a Colorado Mesa team they've beaten each of the past two weeks in a dual scheduled to start at 1 p.m. MST (2 p.m. Denver time).
MSU Denver was unable to earn a second win over a Biola team it defeated 4-2 in California last month.
After the first two doubles matches were split,
Jack McDermott and
David Kijak lost the deciding match at No. 2 in a tiebreak, 7-6 (6).
In singles, McDermott at No. 2 and
Mateo Besada at No. 5 lost first-set tiebreaks and McDermott was eventually defeated 7-6 (3), 6-2. Besada,
Daniel Llorente at No. 1 and
Billy McDermott at No. 6 were headed to third sets, but by that time the match had already been clinched.
"It just didn't go our way today," MSU Denver coach
Josh Graetz said. "The doubles point could have gone either way, and in singles we just couldn't get it done. Credit to Biola."
