DENVER – MSU Denver sent out its departing senior players in style Friday as both the men's and women's teams cruised to 6-1 victories over Colorado Mesa in Pacific West Conference play.
And those seniors –
Mateo Besada,
Daniel Llorente and
Alejandro Martinez-Morilla for the men, plus
Helena Steenberg for the women – had plenty to do with it.
"I'm proud of the four seniors in this program," MSU Denver coach
Josh Graetz said. "They have left an impact and I wish them the best moving forward."
Both teams lost the doubles point before storming back to win all six singles matches.
"Both teams started slow in doubles," Graetz said. "However we were able to move things in our direction fairly quickly in singles."
The Roadrunners' men's team, now 5-8 on the season and ranked seventh in the West Region, defeated the No. 8 regionally ranked Mavericks.
Martinez-Morilla won 7-6 (9), 7-6 (4), 6-1 at No. 3 singles in the most dramatic match of the day. It was his 56
th career singles victory and moved him into third place on the program's all-time win list behind Joey Tscherne (2016-19) and the all-time leader, Graetz himself.
Llorente won 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1 to improve to 45-25 for his career, while Besada – in his third season with MSU Denver – earned his 21
st singles win with a 6-3, 6-1 decision at No. 4. The Roadrunners showed their depth with relatively easy wins for Besada,
David Kijak at No. 5 (6-1, 6-1) and
Jeanloup Auzias at No. 6 (6-4, 6-2).
The same was true for the women, who cruised to relatively easy wins at No. 3 by
Isabel Heras (6-0, 6-0), at No. 4 by
Gala Castello (6-1, 6-1) and at No. 5 by
Lilly Stienemeier (6-3, 6-1).
Marie Cool was able to solidify the sixth point by winning her match 6-2, 2-6, 1-0 (10-7).
The women's team, ranked No. 10 in the region, took down the No. 9 team in the region to boost its overall record to 9-9 on the season and 2-4 in the PacWest.
The dynamic duo of
Brooklyn Ross and Heras are ranked No. 17 in the initial national rankings of the season and did not disappoint today as they walked away with a 6-2 victory. But that was the only doubles match the Roadunners won.
Ross won her No. 1 singles match 6-4, 7-5.
Steenberg, a sophomore in eligibility but who will graduate in three years, dominated in No. 2 singles with a 6-4, 6-3 victory. She improved to 33-22 in singles play as a Roadrunner.
The Roadrunners will close out their weekend at Colorado College on Sunday.
