@RoadrunnerSB: MSU Denver Sweeps Grizzlies

Roadrunners knock 27 hits, get quality defense and solid pitching

ALAMOSA, Colo. – The MSU Denver softball team posted a come-from-behind, opening-game win and then cruised to a doubleheader sweep Saturday, with wins of 10-3 and 9-2 at Adams State.

The Roadrunners had 27 hits on the day while improving to 27-9 overall and 25-7 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

"I thought our team showed up today ready to take care of business and played focused," MSU Denver coach Annie Van Wetzinga said. "When they took the lead in game one, there was no panic or pressing. We simply refocused and answered back with our bats."

Adams State scored three in the bottom of the third to take a 3-2 lead, but the Roadrunners took over with four runs in the fifth and added four more in the sixth for good measure.

Olivia Dampier's two-run triple put the Roadrunners ahead 5-3 and Dampier scored on a Kayla Banks single.

Mackenzie Jamieson was 3-for-4 with an RBI, while Banks, Shelby Robb and Megan Sansburn all had two hits and two RBIs.

While Adams State had five errors on the day, MSU Denver was sharp once again and was charged with only one error.

"Our defense is playing really well," Van Wetzinga said. "The outfield is running down balls and making teams earn bases, and our infielders are playing quick and with energy. It's fun to watch them work out there right now."

In the second game, Kami Grammerstorf was 3-for-4 with two RBIs, Ari Valdez drove in two runs, and Robb, Sansburn and Banks all had a second straight two-hit game. Kassi Reiger also had two hits.

Darby McGhee (15-3) pitched a complete game in the opener, and Destinee Lopez (11-3) worked six innings to win the nightcap.

"Darby and Destinee contained hitters well," Van Wetzinga said. "When they did score, it wasn't big innings and then they came back with shutdown innings. They both had mature performances."

The series continues with a doubleheader Saturday at 11 a.m.
