DENVER – The hoopla over
Tyrei Randall's game-winning 75-foot overtime shot has subsided.
Even if it didn't get the national media play it may have deserved, it helped MSU Denver get an important road split last weekend as the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference season nears its midway point.
That trip, though, which ended with a tough loss at Westminster after the thrilling win at Colorado Mesa, is over.
And another tough road trip awaits.
MSU Denver (12-3 overall, 6-3 RMAC) is on the road for games Friday at UCCS (7:30 p.m.) and Saturday at New Mexico Highlands (7 p.m.).
UCCS is 10-6 overall and 5-5 in the RMAC and has five losses by seven points or less. New Mexico Highlands is 6-7 and 1-6 and has five losses of five points or less.
"Both teams are incredibly dangerous," MSU Denver coach
Michael Bahl said. "Just like everybody, they're both much better at home. It's just another really tough road trip because you're playing two really good road teams, plus the travel."
UCCS leads the RMAC in both offensive and defensive rebounds per game as well as … obviously … total rebounds per game, even though no one averages more than William Becker's 6.0. Becker leads the league and is 13
th nationally with 2.3 blocked shots per game, while Alijah Comithier is fourth in the RMAC with 20.5 points per game.
"They're the best rebounding team in the conference, so our work is cut out for us," Bahl said. "We have to make sure that we do our job. When the shot goes up, the work's not done. When you don't rebound, the game gets really tough. We saw that against Westminster."
Meanwhile Highlands is third in the conference at 82.2 points per game, ranks second in turnovers forced per game (16.2) and is third in blocked shots (3.9). Desmond Carpenter leads the RMAC, and is eighth in Division II, with 2.8 steals per game.
"They're very talented, and it's a very hard prep with their style of play – but you never want to get ahead of yourself so we're only working on UCCS right now," Bahl said. "It's in the back of our minds, but it's UCCS first and then we'll prep for Highlands on Saturday and get ready to go."
MSU Denver still has four players averaging over 12 points per game in
Ra'Shawn Langston (16.9),
Laolu Oke (14.1),
Miles Gibson (13.8) and Randall (12.7).
Oke continues to average a double-double with 12.1 rebounds per game – he's third in Division II in that category, second in offensive rebounds per game (4.4), third in total rebounds (181) and 15
th in defensive boards per game (7.7).
The Roadrunners have rested up from their road trip and are ready to get back after it.
"Any coach will tell you that, this time of year, you are who you are," Bahl said. "So it's more about being as healthy as you can be. It's a matter of working on what you do."
