SALT LAKE CITY – Westminster scored immediately after a red card put MSU Denver one player short with just under five minutes to go, and then the Roadrunners couldn't convert on a penalty kick with 29 seconds left as the host Griffins picked up a 1-0 Friday in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference men's soccer.
"I'm bummed for the boys, because I think we fought hard enough to get a draw out of today," MSU Denver coach
Nick Kirchhof said. "You fight hard against a good, tough opponent on the road but unfortunately we weren't able to tip the scales our direction."
After MSU Denver was assessed a red card, Westminster took the free kick and worked quickly upfield and scored at 85:05.
On the penalty kick,
Aidan Bates pushed it just off target to the right
"I loved the fight," Kirchhof said. "I loved the willingness to bounce back when we did give up a goal and we were able to earn a penalty in the last minute."
MSU Denver dropped to 8-3-2 overall and 2-2-1 in the RMAC. The Roadrunners play Sunday at Colorado Mesa.
"Unfortunately today wasn't our day," Kirchhof said. "We're going to regroup and we're going to be ready to go on Sunday."
