Box Score OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma Christian had five players score in double figures and limited MSU Denver to 32.1 percent shooting Friday night for an 80-55 victory in a men's college basketball season opener.
"Tonight we played a very tough, physical, veteran team from Oklahoma Christian," new MSU Denver coach Dan Ficke said. "It was a great test for our young squad to open up the season.
"Our guys showed great fight, and they never stopped competing. We made runs to get it to single digits a few times but couldn't quite get over the hump."
Tyrei Randall led the Roadrunners with 20 points, and redshirt freshman guard Jaden Kennis scored 13 while making 3 of 6 from 3-point range in his collegiate debut. Forward Caleb McGill added 11.
"Offensively we have to improve our execution, which will take time as a young team," Ficke said. "Tyrei did a great job leading our offensive attack. Jaden and Caleb did a nice job as well."
The low shooting percentage, plus 14 offensive rebounds by Oklahoma Christian, led to a 44-30 deficit in rebounding.
Oklahoma Christian shot 44.1 percent from the field and was just 3 of 14 (21.4 percent) from 3-point range
"Defensively we did a great job guarding the 3-point line, but we have to improve our rebounding and our ability to keep people out of the paint," Ficke said.
MSU Denver plays Arkansas-Fort Smith (0-1) in a neutral-site game on the same floor Saturday at 4 p.m. MST. Arkansas-Fort Smith lost 73-49 Friday to Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference favorite Black Hills State, ranked No. 10 and 5 nationally in Division II.
