@MSUDenverTennis: Men Earn Hard-Fought Win at Newman

Women take doubles point before dropping their dual

WICHITA, Kan. – Both the MSU Denver men's and women's tennis teams won the doubles point in road duals at Newman (Kan.) on Friday, with the men going on to a 4-3 victory but the women falling 5-2.

After doubles wins by brothers Jack and Billy McDermott (No. 1) and Dayton Fisher and Jeanloup Auzias (No. 3), the Roadrunners won three hard-fought singles matches.

Jack McDermott won 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 at No. 2, Carlos Pinedo won 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 at No. 3, and Andy Caruana won 7-5, 7-6 (2) at No. 5. Even the Roadrunners' singles losses were close: Auzias (No. 1) and Alejandro Jimenez (No. 6) both went three sets.

"The guys competed hard today," MSU Denver coach Josh Graetz said. "I thought the match could have gone either way, and I'm just proud of the way we competed and maintained composure at the end."

For the women, doubles wins came from Ava Neuburger-Higby/Isabel Heras (No. 1) and Lilly Steinemeier/Kayla Myburgh (No. 3), but only Steinemeier (at No. 4) was able to win in singles as she cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 win.

"The ladies came out strong in doubles and I thought we executed well," Graetz said. "Credit to Newman in singles. They were just a little better than us today."

Both MSU Denver teams play again Saturday at Emporia State (Kan.).
