@MSUDenverTennis: Roadrunners Women Post Win at Rockhurst

Cool, Castello earn three-set victories

Box Score KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The MSU Denver tennis teams played Sunday at Rockhust (Mo.), with the women earning a 5-2 victory and the men dropping a close 4-3 decision.

"It was a rollercoaster of emotions today for both teams," MSU Denver coach Josh Graetz said. "The ladies came out on top and the guys lost a tough one."

Ava Neuburger-Higby (No. 1), Gala Castello (No. 3), Marie Cool (No. 5) and Monica Guarin (No. 6) all posted victories, with Castello posted a 6-1, 6-7 (5), 6-2 decision and Cool rallying to win 2-6, 7-6 (1), 7-6 (3).

"I'm so proud of the ladies today," Graetz said. "They competed hard and executed well. Rockhurst was talented and just had a win over Newman, who we lost to on Friday. It's special that Monica, a freshman, clinched the match for us."

The men won the doubles points, but won only twice in singles – David Kijak by 6-4, 6-2 and No. 4 and Alejandro Jimenez by 7-6 (2), 6-3 at No. 6.

"The guys started strong by getting the doubles point, but we just couldn't get it done in singles," Graetz said.

MSU Denver wraps up its four-day road trip with duals Monday at William Jewell (Mo.).
