@MSUDenverTennis: Roadrunners Send Seniors Out in Style

Castello, Walisundara go out on top in duals at Assembly Athletic Complex

DENVER – Senior Day for the MSU Denver tennis programs went according to script.

Gala Castello cruised to easy wins in both singles and doubles to help the MSU Denver women to a 5-2 victory and Kacey Walisundara earned his fifth career victory as the men sailed to a 7-0 win against Schreiner (Texas).

Walisundara, a team leader despite appearing in the lineup infrequently for the 53rd-ranked Roadrunners, came from behind for a 1-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-4) victory at No. 6 singles. It was just his fourth official match of 2021-22 and only his second time in the lineup for a dual.

"The guys took care of business today," MSU Denver coach Josh Graetz said. "And I'm happy for Kacey to get a win.
He was tentative early but was able to settle down later into the second set. I'm glad the guys got around him with the win."

The Roadrunners (12-3) dropped only three games in the three doubles matches and only 14 in Nos. 1 through 5 singles.

Andy Caruana improved to 16-4 with his 10th straight win, Carlos Pinedo won his fifth straight to improve to 15-5 and Billy McDermott won his fifth in a row to get to 8-2.

The short-handed women gave up two points after forfeiting at No. 6 singles while losing in three sets at No. 1.

The Roadrunners (10-8) lost only one game in two doubles matches and only eight games at Nos. 2 through 5 singles.

Castello, playing No. 2 singles, won 6-0, 6-2 to improve to 7-7 for the season and 27-22 for her career. She teamed with Marie Cool for a 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles as they improved to 12-3 as a unit this season. Cool played No. 3 singles and won her fifth straight and is now 11-11.

For her career, Castello is an impressive 34-16 in doubles.

"The ladies played a solid doubles point," Graetz said. "In singles, some matches were tighter than maybe they should have been, but we managed to pull out the team win.

"Gala dominated today in doubles and singles. She did a great job of maintaining focus."
