@MSUDenverTennis: Roadrunners Earn Two More Wins Against Mesa

No. 54 Roadrunners men's team earns 7-0 sweep

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – MSU Denver earned two more tennis victories at Colorado Mesa on Friday, as the men swept the Mavericks 7-0 and the women triumphed 5-2.

The 54th-ranked MSU Denver men won all three doubles matches to earn the first point, then won three closely-contested matches while sweeping singles play.

Carlos Pinedo, at No. 2, and Andy Caruana, at No. 5, were each pushed to a super set and won 10-7 in the extra session, while Billy McDermott won a second-set tiebreaker.

Caruana won his ninth straight match to improve to 15-4, while Pinedo (14-5) and McDermott (6-2) each won a fourth consecutive decision.

MSU Denver (11-3) beat Mesa 6-1 at home at the Assembly Athletic Complex last week after dropping the doubles point.

"The guys did a much better job in doubles today, and to get all three doubles matches was great," MSU Denver coach Josh Graetz said. "Mesa played better in singles today, and our guys rose to the occasion. The score was definitely closer than it reflects."

The MSU Denver women improved to 9-8 and improved upon last's week's 4-3 win over the Mavericks despite taking a defeat at No. 1 singles due to retirement.

Gala Castello was particularly impressive at No. 3 singles, winning 6-1, 6-0.

Isabel Heras won her fifth straight match at No. 2. In doubles, Castello and Marie Cool improved to 11-3 with their fifth straight win.

"I'm proud of the ladies today," Graetz said. "The doubles point was important, and we took that momentum into singles."
