BURNABY, British Columbia – MSU Denver yielding only a first-half goal but suffered a 1-0 setback Friday night at Simon Fraser (B.C.) in a women's soccer season opener.
"I'm disappointed in the result, but I thought we had some quality moments in the game," MSU Denver coach
Kat Mertz said. "We were able to see many new faces on the field that provided good energy."
Among the newcomers, transfer defender
Emily Sirois played all 90 minutes, with freshman
Isa Durkin playing 71 and five others playing at least 17 in their collegiate debuts.
Katy Harris put two shots on goal, while
Riley Ostler and
Dani Nelson each had one on target for the Roadrunners.
Kate Giordano put a shot off the crossbar.
Both teams put four shots on goal, though MSU Denver had an 8-5 advantage in both total shots and corner kicks.
"We need to clean up our movement off the ball and our final third attacking moments," Mertz said. "Overall I thought defensively we did a solid job, however need to find more ways to be dangerous in and around the goal."
