BURNABY, B.C. – Hopefully everyone got to the game on time.
MSU Denver freshman
Natalie Boragine just 96 seconds into the game and that was all the Roadrunners needed Sunday in a 1-0 victory over Saint Martin's (Wash.).
"We came out with good focus and energy," MSU Denver coach
Kat Mertz said. "Natalie, a freshman got a goal, and that was pretty cool. She has the potential to do that."
Taking a pass from Giordano, Boragine – who scored seven goals and 11 assists last year as a high school senior -- fired roughly perpendicular to the 6 from outside the box from the right side into the top left corner.
"We started off quickly with that goal in the first couple of minutes, and had good control in the first half," Mertz said. "We were able to see quite a few shots on frame.
"The second half was a little more defensive. It was a team effort all around to grind out a win and get a shutout victory."
The Roadrunners had huge advantages in shots (14-4) and shots on goal (7-2). MSU Denver (1-1) also had a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Freshman goalkeeper
Kylie Bach posted her third career shutout with two saves, including one on a penalty kick in the 82
nd minute.
"Kylie did well," Mertz said. "We had some problems on some set pieces, but for the most parts our backs collectively did a good job of keeping them in front of us."
MSU Denver returns home for games Friday at 6 p.m. against St. Edward's (Texas) and Sunday at 11 a.m. against Bridgeport (Conn.).
