Box Score DENVER – MSU Denver kept its undefeated streak at home intact, but the Roadrunners were looking for a little more.
Leading for nearly the entire second half, the Roadrunners gave up a goal with just 1:41 left in the game and had to settle for a 1-1 tie Friday night at the Assembly Athletic Complex against St. Edward's (Texas).
"We're still undefeated at home (MSU Denver was 9-0-1 at the Assembly Athletic Complex in 2021), and we like that, but we're obviously disappointed to give up a goal in the last couple of minutes," MSU Denver coach
Kat Mertz said. "We've just got to find a way to close out games."
Senior captain
Jaimy Sawaged put the Roadrunners ahead with a terrific individual effort in the 53
rd minute.
The forward simply stole the ball from a St. Edward's defender just outside the goal box and set sail for the goal. She drew the goalkeeper towards her and made a pass to
Katy Coats, but it was deflected by a defender right back to Sawaged in front of an open net.
With the keeper well out of position, Sawaged dribbled patiently around the traffic created by Coats and the defender and scored easily.
"In the first half we were a little slow, a little methodical," Mertz said. "But in the second half we adjusted some things with our defensive pressure and it turned out in our favor. Jaimy did a great job to get to that and scored."
With that in mind, there wasn't much satisfaction in the tie.
On the tying goal, the ball seemed to stay elevated just out of the grasp of MSU Denver goalkeeper
Kayla Caballero several times before the Hilltoppers finally were able to convert.
"There were probably some defensive organization things that we could've taken care of before then that would have prevented that," Mertz said.
The Roadrunners close out the weekend Sunday, with an 11 a.m. home match against Bridgeport (Conn.). The Purple Knights dropped a 2-1 decision Friday at CSU-Pueblo.
"Bridgeport is a good, physical team," Mertz said.
