@MSUDenverTennis: Cool/Haber Reach Quarterfinals in Doubles

Five men, three women played in second-round singles matches

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The MSU Denver women's doubles team of Marie Cool and Hanna Haber has pushed through to the quarterfinals, highlighting the Roadrunners' first day at the ITA West Regional.

"Overall we got better today," MSU Denver coach Josh Graetz said. "We didn't quite have the results we wanted, but it's some very solid competition."

Three of the Roadrunners' six women's players earned wins into the round of 32 before all three were defeated by seeded players in the round of 16.

The men got three wins in the round of 64 to put five into the round of 32 (Jeanloup Auzias and Juho Kantola had earned byes), but none could advance further.

The Cool/Haber team, which has played No. 2 doubles in the Roadrunners' team duals, improved to 6-0 this season with wins of 8-4 over Courtlyn Lam/Savaughna Mayo of Cal State Los Angeles and 8-7 (5) over the fifth-seeded team of Arianna Audelo/Faith Pearson of Point Loma (Calif.)

They'll face fourth-seeded Marleen Tilgner/Abigail Wild of Hawaii Pacific at 2 p.m. Friday in the quarterfinals. The semifinals are scheduled to be played immediately after the quarters.

"Hanna and Marie had a really solid doubles day," Graetz said. 'I'm excited to watch them compete in main draw tomorrow."

In singles, Haber, Kinsey Fields and Lilly Stienemeier were all first-round winners before losing in the second round. After suffering first-round defeats, Kambra Roles and Cool are both alive in the consolation bracket, but 16th-seeded Isabel Heras suffered a second three-set (10-point tiebreaker) defeat. Roles lost her first-round matchup in three as well.

Both Cool and Roles won consolation matches and have advanced to the quarterfinals of that bracket.

For the men, Carlos Pinedo, Alejandro Jimenez and Billy McDermott all won their way into the round of 32, but Pinedo and Jimenez both lost in the 10-point tiebreaker while Auzias and Kantola each lost in two. Dayton Fisher lost in the tiebreaker in the round of 64, while Kantola was eliminated in the tiebreaker in a consolation match.

"We had some players lose that 10-point tie-breaker, so we just need to try and focus on getting the job done in two sets," Graetz said.

McDermott/Auzias were first-round winners in doubles before losing, and the sixth-seeded Kantola/Pinedo pairing lost 8-7 (6) in a second-round match after receiving a first-round bye. They are still alive and into the consolation quarterfinals, along with Fisher/Jimenez.
