LA MIRADA, Calif. – MSU Denver scored five runs in the each of the first two innings to take all the suspense out of the final game of its series at Biola (Calif.).
The Roadrunners rolled to a 15-5 victory Saturday to finish with a 3-1 series victory.
"I'm pleased with how the guys played again today," MSU Denver coach
Ryan Strain said. "We played really hard the last two days and played well."
After losing Thursday's opener 12-2, MSU Denver scored 39 runs over the final three games while improving to 6-1 for the season.
"It was a good weekend for us," Strain said. "I think we learned that we have to play hard all the time and hopefully we'll continue that into next weekend."
Zach Schuler's second-inning grand slam gave the Roadrunners a 10-0 lead, and
Tanner Garner homered later to make it 12-3 in the sixth. Schuler added a two-run double in the seventh for a 15-3 advantage.
Schuler was 4-for-5 with six RBIs and finished the series 9-for-17 with seven RBIs. Garner homered for the second straight day and was 7-for-15 with six RBIs in the series.
Cody Schultz was 3-for-3 and
Gavin Schmeh was 2-for-4 with a double and his first collegiate homer.
"We swung the bats well all day and kept the pressure on them," Strain said. "And we got some other guys guys some at-bats towards the end, which is good."
On the mound, Jack Smolinski (1-0) pitched four no-hit innings and turned in a solid five-inning start, allowing three runs on four hits, with four walks and five strikeouts.
Tyler Schultz (1 2/3 innings) and
Brad Helton (1 1/3) each turned in scoreless outings out of the bullpen.
"Slominski gave us a great start today," Strain said. "After jumping on them early he came out and put up some zeroes for us to keep the momentum.
"Our pitching staff did a nice job all weekend."
