DENVER – After opening the series with two wins that were a little too close for comfort, the MSU Denver softball team cruised to a doubleheader sweep Saturday against Adams State, winning 13-5 and 10-1 in games that ended after five innings due to the eight-run rule.
"It was nice to come out much sharper than we were yesterday," MSU Denver coach
Annie Van Wetzinga said. "It was fun to see different people play and contribute."
The Roadrunners shared the pitching wealth all weekend, as all four hurlers drew starts.
Maddy Wilson and
Cheyenne Prieto were the winners in their first MSU Denver starts Saturday – Prieto pitched a complete game in the nightcap.
"Jenna (Medhus) and Audrey (Burt) pitched the vast majority of the innings in Texas (during a nine-game, season-opening road trip), but we told Maddy and Chy, 'We need you,'" Van Wetzinga said.
Prieto was particularly effective. After giving up a first-inning run to the leadoff hitter, she didn't allow another run the rest of the way, scattering four hits and four walks for her first collegiate win.
"Cheyenne was really steady," Van Wetzinga said. "It wasn't perfect. It didn't come easily. But she was able to pitch around traffic on the bases and she after they got hits, she would bounce back. And that's what pitching is. It's not always going to be easy. You've got to be able to execute pitches when it matters."
In the opener,
Alexia Boring hit a three-run homer and
Adriana Bueno also homered.
Shelby Robb had two triples and a double in the opener and in her first series of the season finished 6-for-11 (.545) with six extra-base hits.
Hannah DiFabio was 3-for-3 in the second game and 4-for-6 for the day.
The first-game homer was the second of the series for Boring, who is batting .364 with seven RBIs through 13 games.
"She's someone you can count on," Van Wetzinga said. "That's why you're seeing her have these good at-bats. She's a consistent person and a consistent worker. It's fun to see someone like that have success."
