COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The MSU Denver softball team remained unbeaten in Rocky Mountain Athletic Confernce play after sweeping a Saturday doubleheader at UCCS, 3-1 and 10-3.
The Roadrunners, 9-6 overall and 6-0 in the RMAC, got complete-game pitching performances from both
Audrey Burt in the opener and
Jenna Medhus in the nightcap, and
Katie Maney and
Shelby Robb each hit momentum-building homers.
"I was really happy with Jenna and Audrey today," MSU Denver coach
Annie Van Wetzinga said. "They pitched with confidence and let their defense help them. Our catchers, Jaiden (Geist) and Gen (Bower), called really nice games for them.
"I've been really pleased with our defense also. We finished last weekend with great defense, and we continued that today. It really helps our pitchers when they don't have to throw extra pitches because the defense is taking care of things."
In the first game, Burt (3-4) matched her career high with 10 strikeouts, allowing one run on three hits while walking one. She allowed a first-inning solo homer and only two hits the rest of the way.
MSU Denver tied the game 1-1 on Geist's second-inning sacrifice fly, then Maney's solo homer put the Roadrunners ahead to stay a 2-1 in the third.
Adriana Bueno tacked on an insurance run in the fourth with an RBI single.
Medhus (4-2) allowed three runs on six hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
Robb's two-run homer in the first inning started the scoring for MSU Denver, which also had two-games from Maney,
Aaliyah Arellano and
Kami Grammerstorf.
"Things were a little slow to get going offensively today, but we had some good base running and timely hits in game one," Van Wetzinga said. "In game two we were able to string more hits together and just get things going early. That allows the pitcher and defense relax and do their thing."
The teams will play another doubleheader Sunday at 11 a.m.
