SAN ANTONIO – St. Mary's (Texas) scored five runs in the bottom of the six inning to complete a comeback from a 5-0 deficit and knocked off MSU Denver 8-5 Thursday to complete a sweep of a softball doubleheader.
St. Mary's won the opening game 9-0.
"It's tough to lose two games the way we did today," MSU Denver coach
Annie Van Wetzinga said. "To put it bluntly, they dominated us in game one. Their pitcher was really good, and their hitters made good adjustments and hit balls hard. We didn't have an answer on either side."
MSU Denver, testing itself against top competition in Texas, finished its season-opening road trip at 3-6 heading into its Feb. 17 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opener against Adams State. All six of the Roadrunners' losses came to teams that played in the 2022 NCAA Division II Tournament.
"We played some tough competition on this trip," Van Wetzinga said. "Now we need to use it as we go into RMAC play."
In the nightcap, MSU Denver scored five first-inning runs on the strength of RBI singles by
Hannah DiFabio,
Miah Hartvigsen,
Genevieve Bower and Adrianna Bueno.
"I was happy with how our team turned the page after the first game and came out with energy and scored five runs in the first," Van Wetzinga said. "But as a young team, we need to be consistent with how we compete."
In the end, Roadrunners were held to seven hits, all singles.
In the opener, MSU Denver had just two hits, one each from Hartvigsen and
Audrey Burt.
