FRESNO, Calif. – The MSU Denver men's and women's tennis teams opened their West Coast road trip with victories over Holy Names (Calif.), as the 35
th-ranked men cruised to a 5-0 decision and then women won 4-2.
In the five points played to completion in the men's dual, the Roadrunners dropped only nine games, posting a pair of 6-1 victories for the doubles points and then getting easy singles wins at No. 1 by
Jeanloup Auzias (6-3, 6-1), at No. 2 by
Juho Kantola (6-1, 6-2) by
Alejandro Jimenez at No. 3 (6-0, 6-0) and by
Stephen Kossifas at No. 4 (6-2, 6-1).
The men improved to 8-3 in duals.
"I thought the men played a very focused doubles point and that gave us confidence going into the singles," MSU Denver coach
Josh Graetz said. "We played well."
The women, who improved to 9-4, also won a pair of 6-1 decisions to win the doubles point.
Marie Cool at No. 2,
Kinsey Fields at No.3 and
Lilly Stienemeier at No. 6 were singles winners.
"The ladies executed well in the doubles," Graetz said. "Singles was a little up and down, but we found a way to win."
Both MSU Denver teams play twice Sunday, with the women playing Academy of Art (Calif.) and the men facing Hawaii-Hilo at 10 a.m. MDT, and then both teams playing host Fresno Pacific (Calif.) at 3 p.m. MDT.
